Five Things People Need Right Now, and Why They Buy

A short Facebook video made a simple point about selling: if you can name five things people need most right now, you can sell. I'm Damon Nelson, and after more than 30 years in marketing, I think that's close to right. The trick is that the need is the reason people buy, not your feature list.

The five needs

Time. Give someone back an hour a day and they will pay for it.

Clarity. When people are staring at ten options, show them the one path forward.

Status. People want to feel important and a step ahead of their peers.

Certainty. People want to know what happens next. The seller who lays out a clear, believable outcome stands out.

Connection. A lot of people feel more alone than ever. Help them feel part of something.

Features are what it does. Needs are why they buy.

Most sales pages lead with features: the dashboard, the integrations, the number of templates. A buyer translates those into one question: what does this do for me? The five needs are the answers to that question.

"Automated email sequences" is a feature. "Your follow-up goes out while you're with a client" is time. "Fifty templates" is a feature. "Here's the one to use first" is clarity.

SELL THE NEED. THE FEATURES ARE PROOF.

The story behind the story

This idea isn't new. Copywriters have long taught that you sell the result, not the product. Elmer Wheeler's 1937 line "Don't sell the steak. Sell the sizzle" is the famous version. What the video adds is a short, modern list you can check your own offer against.

Connection is the one I'd point out. It's why communities, masterminds and member groups work. People don't only buy the information. They buy being in the room with others doing the same work.

How to use it this week

Look at what you sell and ask which of these five it actually delivers. Pick the strongest one. Rewrite your headline and first paragraph around that need, and move the feature list below it as proof. If your product delivers none of the five, that's worth knowing too.
