The Trillionaire in the Basement
Nov 06, 2026
Mark Cuban was sitting with the head of a big consumer food company. The executive wanted to talk about acquisitions. Cuban suggested a different exercise, and it took about three minutes.
I'm Damon Nelson. I've been a marketer and developer for more than 30 years, and I build AI systems for small businesses every week. Cuban's story, told in a short clip a16z posted on X on Oct. 28, 2026, is the clearest case I've heard for why the small operator has the edge right now. Here's what he said, and what I think it means.
The three-minute cookie

Cuban picked the company's number one product, a cookie. Then he asked ChatGPT to create a competitor that was more GLP-1 friendly and would be priced lower. He asked for a full bill of materials, sources, manufacturing, and what he would have to do.
In his telling, the answer came back in about three minutes. The executive had no idea that was possible.
That's one anecdote, told by Cuban, and he didn't say whether the plan was any good. But the point he drew from it wasn't about the cookie.
Book smart, not street smart

Cuban was clear that the AI wasn't the hero. "AI is not smart," he said. "It's book smart maybe, but it's not street smart. It's not entrepreneur smart. You've got to have somebody there who guides it and helps it."
And here's his real warning for big companies: until the people at the top understand how it works, "it's going to be very difficult for that organization." He called it the greatest struggle for most organizations.
THE TOOL IS BOOK SMART. YOU BRING THE STREET SMARTS.
The opening for one person
Then he turned to entrepreneurs: "There's no better time to be an entrepreneur than right now. There will be the trillionaire in the basement. There will be somebody who puts out their own agent swarm on an entrepreneurial basis."
Take "trillionaire" as Cuban's prediction, not a forecast anyone can check. The useful part is the gap he describes. A large company needs its leaders to learn, agree and approve before anything changes. A shop owner can try something tonight.
What the basement looks like

Picture a small business after closing time. One agent researches the market. One drafts the next offer. One follows up with every new lead. The owner does the street-smart part: picking what to build, checking the work, and deciding what goes out.
That isn't science fiction. It's what we build in our sessions, one system at a time.
How to use it this week
Do Cuban's exercise on your own business. Take your best product and ask an AI model to design a competitor that beats it on one thing your customers care about. Read the answer as if a rival wrote it. Then decide what you'd change before someone else does. If you don't know where to start, Cuban's own advice applies: that's a question you can ask the model too.
